iPad to iMac pairing via Bluetooth

I received a message stating that using Bluetooth to connect my iPad Pro to my iMac is not supported. But Bluetooth must be active on both devices for Universal Control to work. I am unable to to get UC working and I assume Bluetooth incompatibility is the issue? (iMac 12.3, iPad Pro 15.4) Edit: I can use "mirroring" only, handoff of mouse and keyboard does not work.

Pairing an iPad and a Mac is not supported. For Universal Control, Bluetooth must be turned on in both devices but they are not (and cannot be) paired. The following has other information and requirements that may help: Universal Control: Use a single keyboard and mouse between Mac and iPad - Apple Support
