iMovie Maps

Wondering if anyone knows what the right format is to add gps coördinates in the moving maps of iMovie. I tried the most common format, i.e. 49.923670, 4.517200, that did not work.

I tried 49.923670 N, 4.517200 W, that also did not work. In Google Maps and Apple Maps this works. I want to add the locations where I flew with my drone. Anyone? I use iMovie 10.3.1, MacOS 11.6.5, M1 MacMini.

iMovie seems to be using the number format you specified in the Language&Region settings. My Mac is set to use the German number format, so I have to use the comma as the decimal separator instead of the decimal point. When I use the decimal point, I get a message "location not found" (niet gevonden), but with the comma instead of the decimal point and without a comma between latitude and longitude I get a the location in France.

Your example is showing a western longitude. if you want western longitudes or southern latitudes, use negative numbers. This way I could enter the flight from east to west, from 49.923670 4.517200 to 49.923670 -4.517200 .

That is beautiful picture you took, such a clear air and lots of sunlight.

Hello Léonie (gute morgen), thanks for your reply! You were right, also in Holland we use the comma as decimal separator. And I used the 'point'. When I changed this, it worked. You then can enter the name of the place yourself.

Thank you for your compliment. The phone is taken with a 'beginners' drone, the Mavic Mini. The photo was taken on januari 25, at 15:48.

When I pasted in your coordinates, 49.923670, 4.517200, it worked. It was a location in Rocroi, France. I got this:

I used the Ken Burns effect to zoom in on it like this:

It doesn't seem that that would give you sufficient detail to pin point a drone flight. I would use the coordinates to locate the spot on Google Maps and take a screen shot of the location, import it into iMovie and use Ken Burns to zoom in if you want.

This is what I got.

If you drag the above into your timeline you can use the Ken Burns effect on it to zoom in.

You might also try typing in 08230 Rocroi, France instead of the coordinates.

Hello Rich, thank you very much for your quick reply, and you tips to get a work around. Indeed the first place I flew my drone on my holiday was in Rocroi.

When I add the coördindates in the appropriate field, or even the combination postal code, as you kindly suggested. So I think I will follow your advice, and use Google Maps for a better map. And maybe do an animation with Keynote. To say 'thank you' I add an aerial picture of Rocroi I made with my drone. The Dutch text in the input window says: not found. Try a nearby city or airport.

Hello Rich, my drone (my first one ever) is a DJI Mavic Mini. Because it's under 250 you can fly it in Holland/Europe without a license. Only, because it has a camera, I needed to register myself as 'user'. So, not the drone is registered, but me. No mather how much drones I have. In the meantime I made a kind of plug-in in Motion, that allows me to use two maps in one clip: the big one from Google Maps, and the small one from iMovie maps. Furthermore there is a red pin-point with an animation and the name of the place, which the user can move around in FCP. It is not perfect yet, as I did not follow a Motion course. Here an example.
