Password changed by Apple?

suddenly, (~3/30/2022), my access to iCloud email has been blocked through Outlook 365.

Password has not been changed by me. Password is the same on all other access to email on iCloud, specifically via www.icloud.com.

Apple account on communities is still true with password.

I read instructions, then removed that account from Outlook 365 and closed the program, restarted PC.

My Apple account is accessible with previous password.

Did Apple change my password?

No, Apple did not change your password. You'll need an app password to use Outlook if your account is set to two-factor authentication and the device has not been authenticated. Visit appleid.apple.com

It obviously occurred about April 1.

what a nasty thing to do to the not-a-geek.
Might a notice be offered to me as it happens vs struggling in the back woods trying to find a way home?

I think you've somehow been scammed. Apple doesn't assign you passcodes. I recommend that you immediately change your Apple ID passcode and enable two-factor authentication.
