Yesterday I tried to transfer all the photos from my iphone 12 camera roll to my mac. I failed to do so (it could not read my phone properly, I suppose due to a worn out cable). After that, all the photos and videos (6500 thousand of them) on my iphone became blurry - so saved in lower quality, have an exclamation point on them and I can't seem to access them any way. I must mention, iCloud was never enabled on my phone or on my mac, I don't use that for these devices. All of the tips on retrieving my photos I found online are related to iCloud, but that is not the case here. I tried: updating from ios 14 to the newest one (15.4.1), reset all the settings of the phone to factory settings, and also deleted some stuff to free up 2,99 GB of space. None of those things helped. All the photos I try to take after the failed transfer are taken in normal quality and I can access them without an issue. The problem are all the photos prior to that (so my whole camera roll). I'm going crazy over here, please help.

Oh and when I installed the new ios (which took more than an hour to do via my mac) there was a backup made, and that is the only backup I have. The backup size is 30 GB and my iphone's memory is 65 gb. Does that mean all my photos are lost? Because on my iphone it still says 62 out of 65 GB are full.

Please help :(

When you tried to transfer the photos to your Mac, did you enable the checkmark "Delete after import"? Then the photos may have become deleted on your iPhone, even if the transfer to the Mac failed. It is very risky to use this option, as the photos will be deleted before we can check if the transfer has worked well.

Do you really have no backup of your iPhone other than the one you made after the photos got damaged? Have you ever saved photos to your Mac before?

If you have no copy at all, try data recovery software , like Disk Drill: https://www.cleverfiles.com

It will run on your Mac and can recover remaining image files from your iPhone, unless installing the update should have removed too many files. Use the free trial version to see what could be recovered and stop using the iPhone until you have tried the data recovery. Anything you do now might delete more items that could be recovered.

So when I tried to transfer the photos from iphone to my mac, i tried to do it by copying them from image capture, not thorugh itunes, so I definitely did not checkmark delete after import. I also haven't imported anything because mac stopped recognising my phone after the first 100 photos, so it's not that the system deleted anything, all the photos and videos are still here I just can't open them in full quality (I feel like I'm going crazy). Also, I found a patch of photos and videos - maybe around 200 of them, in the middle of my camera roll, that were not affected by this, and are still in full quality and can be opened normally - really weird. Some of the photos (out of 6000 of them) are transferred to mac from my previous transfer done in January, but around 4000 of them are not saved anywhere and I really need to retrieve them somehow.

I will definitely try the recovery software you recommended and update you back on it. But I am wondering, is there anything else I can do, try contacting apple directly or something? Why would something like this happen in the first place (both the mac and the iphone are not more than a year old)? I'm still in shock, and I need some of those photos for work, so any advice is well appreciated.

We have one single Apple Store in the entire country (Croatia) and it's in the capital, Zagreb, where I don't live. I'm not even sure whether they have a genius bar, but I'll call and check.

Thank you, I checked, it became enabled after the update (so after the photos got deleted) but that still changes nothing, I just disabled it now because all of my 200 GB of icloud are full a long time ago.
