Upgrade from Mojave to Monterey failed

The attempted upgrade from Mojave to Monterey failed (System showed a back screen with a spinning windmill for ~20 h).

I attempted to restart the mac. I stated with the apple Logo wne through massages indicating time remaining. This got to less than a minute then no further.

Attempt to start up in safe mode turned off the Mac.

Booted from recovery partion (CMD-R) ran disk Utility. This gives many: directory valence check error: nchildred (1) does not match drec count (0).

Where should I go from here?

Not sure if this should be considered a Mojave or a Monterey problem.

If First Aid is unable to repair the APFS file system while booted into Internet Recovery Mode, then you will need to erase the whole physical drive and reinstall macOS followed by restoring/migrating from a backup. Erasing the drive will delete everything on that drive. There are no third party utilities for repair an APFS volume because Apple has not released the necessary APFS documentation yet.

There is also a possibility the drive may have a physical problem. You may want to try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't detect many types of drive failures. Depending on the exact model of the Mac, there may be other ways to check the health of the drive.
