Airplay not working with Safari

Recently, I noticed that Airplay from my phone to the appleTV was not working. I just had some time to troubleshoot, and here is what I found. All devices mentioned are running the latest software and all routers/access points have been rebooted.

Initial attempts were from my iPhone to 2 different AppleTVs and a Sony tv. I then tried from my iPhone to a friends Sony tv. Also tried their iPhone to their Sony tv. Each of these attempts was using a Safari webpage to attempt streaming video and all were unsuccessful.

I then tried an iPad using safari on all the above devices and it still failed.

Finally, I tried my iPhone, friends iPhone, and the iPad on all the above devices but using other apps besides Safari. All of them worked seamlessly. It appears to be an issue with Safari. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Both AppleTVs are connected directly to routers. Both Sony TVs are Airplay compatible. There is no error message being shown. Each iPhone/iPad “thinks” it is air playing to the tv or AppleTV because the iOS interface indicates as such, but it’s not working. If I’m in the home menu of the AppleTV when I attempt to AirPlay, the screen will go dark, then immediately back to the home screen. Again, this is ONLY when using Safari from either an iPhone or an iPad. Using airplay from another app (Netflix, TV, YTTV, etc) everything works from each device to each device mentioned.

I just attempted to AirPlay from my MacBook Pro using Safari and other apps, and everything worked correctly.

The problem appears to be with Safari from mobile devices.

Welcome JVBAMA40,

We understand that you're unable to screen mirror your devices when trying to play a video in Safari. Great job isolating the issue. To clarify, do you receive an error message? Having this information will allow us to get better understanding of the issue

Try connecting one of your Apple TVs directly to the router with an Ethernet cable instead of using Wi-Fi to see if that helps. Also, be sure your friend's Sony TV is compatible with AirPlay. Here's how to check: Home-AirPlay 2–Enabled TVs and Devices

For the best performance, check out these suggestions : Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

We look forward to hearing back from you. Cheers!
