Desktop items dissapeared on Imac

hello,

i opened my computer today and every item and file I had saved to my desktop has disapeared, on the computer it seems as if it was cleared! I do not want this!! I checked my icloud desktop files on my phone and they seem to exist there but not on the computer, why is this? how do I get them back? Have they been deleted? thank so much.
