Notification sound I cannot recognize

Occasionally I get this notification sound that is like a cross between the SWOOSH and a wave breaking. I have no idea what is set to notify me with this sound. At first it seemed to be whenever there was a weather notice of an extreme event, like if there was a tornado coming. But the weather app has a different sound set for it. It just went off a few minutes ago that got me here. And I had just installed the new iPad operating system. Maybe it was a sound letting me know it was done? When I swiped up I was getting all the languages and a welcome screen. Any clue? PS As an aside: The notifications and all the possibilities, though are helpful, sometimes are even more annoying. Persistent? Brief? Alert? Sound? No sound? Closed? Open? Locked? Unlocked? Automatic? Manual? Always? Never? There's got to be over 40 combinations for every app. :-) PS And I assume it's the iPad. The iPhone and the MacMini are in the same room much of the time. And I have different settings for everything.

Hi TuckerdogAVL,

Apple support have a couple of articles that may help, or provide a troubleshooting clue:

Change or turn off iPad sounds – Apple Support (AU)

View and respond to notifications on iPad – Apple Support (AU)

All the best :-)

Hi. thanks for the info but I'm not looking for an "all or nothing" solution. I don't want to turn off all the notifications. I want to IDENTIFY this notification and where it's coming from. I've attempted to go through and identify every app and notifications and how and when and what and the noise they make. And I cannot even find the sound. When I have an hour or two that I don't mind never getting back, I'll go through all the sounds again one by one and see if I can find what it is. I think it has something to do with weather alerts or when an upgrade/install is done. I'll take a look at swiping up as well to see if I can identify. The second article may help. We all really have been sold a bill of goods with all the swiping. I love how I'll be looking at something and accidentally swipe something and it's gone forever. :-)

You're welcome. Sorry the source of the sound has not become apparent.

Commiserations on the swiping ... certainly know what you mean there!

The sound you describe is a bit like the sound I get when an e-mail that has, for some reason, gone to the outbox instead of being immediately dispatched, finally goes on its way ... often I'm now engrossed elsewhere without realising the message hadn't gone.

:-)

Thanks. That's the swoosh for sure (The outgoing). This is like a harp/swoosh. I think I discovered it, and the "swiping to see notifications" link above helped. Since most often the phone and tablet are in the same room (though I am one who doesn't have my phone surgically attached to my hand), I often confuse where the sound is coming from. And, since there are notification combos for each and all devices, it can be challenging. Fortunately for my sanity have have 98% of pings, dings, dongs, bongs turned off.

On that note (pun intended), when the sound - which is more like a harp - happened yesterday, by following the swiping challenge, I found what apparently was an "urgent weather alert notification" ie thunderstorms, tornados and such. And it was the phone.

So my next challenge is to find which sound that is, and that should be "just simply" (my favorite 21st century phrase) going to the notifications. I'll be going in later. Thanks all.
