Dell S3422dwg resolution on MacBook Pro not recognizing

Hi Everyone, I recently did an update to macOS Monterey Version 12.3.1 and now my Dell S3422DWG will not recognize the resolution past 1340 x 1900. It should be able to go up to 3440 X 1440 which it did before the update.

Has anyone else ran into this issue? If so how did you resolve it?

Also, I have tried different HDMI cables, as well I connected the monitor to a Windows 10 machine and no problems recognizing the 3440 X 1440 resolution

I just bought a Dell monitor yesterday and having this issue. I set "Smart HDR" on my Dell to "Off" which opened up the 2560 x 1440 option on my Mac but it's still not using the full width of my monitor. Pretty annoying to the point where I'll probably return the monitor.

I found something in another topic that might be helpful. I can't try it since I don't yet have the monitor.

"Hi same issues here since update to 12.3.1.

2x LG ULTRA WIDE monitors connected to Mac Mini. 1 of them could not get the correct resolution.

  • Unplugging didn't work
  • Trying all options in Display settings: no result

Solution:

  1. Change INPUT SETTINGS in monitor hardware to accept the wrong maximum input Mac OS provided, resulting in 2 black sidebars.
  2. Then went back to DISPLAY SETTINGS Mac OS. And tadaa: the correct resolution was shown under SCALED dropdown.
  3. Select the correct resolution under scaled (ultra wide 2560x1080)
  4. Once selected MAC OS gives a short flash in both screens et voila! Both screens accept the "Default for Display" resolution

Just got off the phone with Apple support and they want me to wipe my system completely clean, then provide them logs of my blank system.

I was hoping someone from the community had this issue and has found a resolution because it appears the last update for MacBook Pro's macOS Monterey version 12.3.1. has effected the video card.

This review got my attention because they have a MacBook Pro 16" 2021 because that is what I have tested on:

Does not work with 2021 MacBook Pro

This cable does not work at all with the MacBook Pro 16" 2021, tested with multiple monitors. This seems to be an issues for users other than me too. Useless cable, they should stop selling it while this issue exists.

It appears Apple didn't add that into the Update Fix description

macOS Monterey 12.4 includes enhancements to Apple Podcasts and bug fixes:

  • Apple Podcasts includes a new setting to limit episodes stored on your Mac and automatically delete older ones
  • Support for Studio Display Firmware Update 15.5, available as a separate update, refines camera tuning, including improved noise reduction, contrast, and framing

Strikemaster did you try it?

May 20, 2022 1:34 AM in response to strikemaster

Nope, Apple did not want to acknowledge it is an issue with their last update. They sent me back to Dell and Asus.

Dell has been terrible support. I will never purchase a Dell product again from this experience

Asus the only way to get support is by email and they are just rotating support people. Which they have been asking the same question the last agent had not reading the e-mails.

So no help from the Monitor manufactures.

What are you experiencing Strikemaster ?

It appears the first review on the display port cable mentions it did not work

"All Macs and PCs certified for Thunderbolt 3, are also certified to push display signaling (via DisplayPort) over USB-C. Unfortunately this cable did not work with recent generation MacBook Pro and recent generation Dell display, but of which are certified for DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C. Could just be a defective cable but rating 3 stars. Will try another brand of same cable spec / connector types, if that also fails will revise this review since that would indicate not something specific to StarTech model. Generally, in the past, I've had good luck with StarTech specialty display cables like this one (i.e. something other than the same connector spec / type on both ends)."

I received the monitor and the USB-C to DisplayPort cable this morning. Attaching the monitor via DisplayPort to my 2019 16" MacBook Pro worked immediately. The monitor came up in 3440x1440 and I was able to set it to 144 Hz in the Mac's display settings.

So far I'm quite happy with the monitor. I haven't detected and dead pixels, colors and black levels look good. I am wondering a though how well I'll manage with picture-by-picture once I have an opportunity to test it.
