Why is the Apple TV interface so awful?

Trying to get to an earlier episode of an Apple TV show (after the app abruptly kicks me out of the episode I was watching to play the next episode) is virtually impossible. I'm googling to try to find out how and all I find is other posts from people frustrated with Apple TV.

Isn't Apple supposed to be a designed-focused company?
