iTunes for Windows is not playing back Movies or TV Shows

iTunes for Windows is not playing back purchased movies or tv shows. It's as if there is an issue with video codecs. The app has been clean reinstalled several times, reauthorized, rolled back to previous version all with no luck. Graphics drivers have been updated, switched from nVidia GPU to integrated GPU and suffering the same issue with playback.

Once you click a film or tv show to play, the video window opens but hangs on a black screen and iTunes needs to be forcibly closed / end process to get out of the app.

Please advise a potential cause / fix for this issue. I can't playback any content purchased through Apple on Windows at this point.

*Running on Windows 11.

*Have tried the latest version of iTunes and the older version available on Apple's download page.

Windows, Windows 10

It’s a laptop so not an external monitor issue. It’s an issue with the iTunes app itself - perhaps compatibility with Windows 11. Apple does not seem to update iTunes for Windows that often

*I can play H264 and ProRes files out-with iTunes so it’s not codecs on the machine (unless related to proprietary codecs within iTunes)

*All drivers are up-to-date including the integrated GPU drivers.

A hanging black screen on video playback suggests some sort of graphics related issue or bug? But I have tried disabling discreet graphics and using integrated graphics and it still doesn’t work.

Nope. I downloaded a film to check if it was the streaming and had the same issue.

the furthest I get is into the film’s menu and when I click play it just hangs. I thought it might be streaming issue so I also turned off my firewall and antivirus temporarily to check with that and it didn’t help.

so thinking it’s app related / codec or graphics vs netwoek.

@tt2

If you can check if playback works on your Windows 11 machine at some point over the next few days that would be super helpful. *I don't have access to another W11 machine or know anyone who has to W11 yet to check.

At least I'll know if it's a more widespread issue or specifically just my computer. I know that AMD has had some issues recently / bugs etc and I have an AMD based laptop. So it might be that contributing to the video playback or graphic issue if all is working ok on your Windows 11 machine.

Ah well. Thanks for testing and getting back to me.

Must be a driver then or something in Windows / nVidia / AMD. I don't time to exhaustively roll back all drivers and software updates just to get iTunes to work so I guess I won't be watching any itunes library content anytimme soon!

Just hope that whatever has broken it will fix itself in the distant future.

Cheers

I did, they are useless. They just tell me to reinstall and reauthorise. Done all that multiple times. Doesn’t fix it. It worked about a year ago so I dunno what has happened since then with the latest app updates.

Apple have a TV and Apple Music app on Xbox. I don’t understand why they don’t have a Windows app or why we can’t install the xbox app on a PC.

or most compatible hassle free option is to let us access our iTunes library content via the browser. You can watch Apple TV+ in a browser but not purchased iTunes films and shows? Still paying Apple for the content so what gives?

Seems like a deliberate decision to prevent or make it as difficult as possible for users to access Apple purchased content from a Windows device.
