Home Keys

I've been added as an additional Resident in a Home that was set up by the Owner using an iPad instead of an iPhone. I want to use Home Keys to lock and unlock a Schlage Encode Plus deadbolt that is Home Keys compatible.

How do I set up my iPhone to use Home Keys on the Schlage Encode Plus?

Because the Home was set up by the Owner on an iPad, the iPad can't use Home Keys (perhaps because an iPad doesn't have NFC?). So when I got my invitation to become an additional Resident from that iPad, I got no offer to set up Home Keys on my iPhone.

Am I out of luck because the Home was set up on an iPad instead of an iPhone? I don't know why that should keep my iPhone from using Home Keys but that's what it seems.

Hi Ed,

If the iPad is being used as a HomeKit hub, this shouldn't be a problem, and will actually open up the additional feature of remote access. Schlage has some more information at

Tap to unlock Schlage’s latest smart lock with Apple home keys.

If you still aren't seeing the option to add the home keys, we encourage you to contact Schlage directly, as they should be able to provide more assistance on setting the lock up.

All the best.

Hi Edwin,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities.

The steps outlined in the Apple Support article Add a HomeKit accessory to the Home App - Apple Support discuss how you can add an accessory to your Home app, including the following information if you're having trouble:

If you can't add an accessory

• Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
• Make sure that your accessories support HomeKit or AirPlay 2.
• To use and manage your home in the Home app on all of your devices, sign in to iCloud with your Apple ID on every device. Then turn on iCloud Keychain and Home in iCloud Settings.

Best!

Lindsay, thanks for trying to help but that didn’t address my problem. You explained how to add an accessory. That’s not my problem; the Schlage Encode Plus IS added. But HomeKeys doesn’t work so I can’t lock/unlock by touching my iPhone to the lock - apparently because the lock was originally set up on an iPad, not with an iPhone that supports NFC. Ed

Neil22R, thanks for trying but, no, that didn't help. I spent a lot of time with Apple Support and we both noticed that the Apple support article you mentioned isn't helpful. It assumes HomeKeys is activated on a HomeKit's Home Resident's phone. But there's no explanation anywhere about how one activates HomeKeys in the first place.

I think perhaps I'm not adequately describing my situation which leads to these non-helpful answers. So here's the deal: When a HomeKit Home Owner activates a HomeKeys-capable lock on an iPhone, they automatically get an alert that HomeKeys has been placed in their Wallet and they only have to choose whether to activate Express Unlocking or not. Also, any Resident that they invite also automatically has HomeKeys set up.

My situation is different because I'm talking about a Home Owner who sets up a HomeKeys Home using an iPad instead of an iPhone because they don't own an iPhone. It just seems to me that an additional Resident invited to the Home ought to be able to activate HomeKeys later on their iPhone after their original invitation which did not automatically include that HomeKeys ability.
