iPhone randomly switching Bluetooth devices

This is so, so frustrating! And I cannot believe Apple has not resolved this issue considering that there are so many people who’ve expressed experiencing the same issue since 2018 on this community forum.

im on a phone call (regardless of whether it is native phone app) using my AirPods, and suddenly the Bluetooth drops out and the call now switches to my car. And then at random, it comes back through my AirPods.

Apple support team, please do not tell me to switch off Bluetooth (why on earth did you invent the AirPod otherwise!!) and please do not refer me to Accessibility > Call Audio Routing. Been there, done that and the problem remains.

From the posts I’ve read, I get a sense Apple does not know how to fix the issue or simply do not care!

Why is it that we do not experience this with Android but only iOS??

Hi OrigamiFan1,

the resources you’ve suggested do not merely address the issue I’m facing. Once again, I see that Apple/community completely avoids addressing the issue.

i don’t have an out of range issue or distorted wireless audio.

the issue is simply explained: when I’m on a call in my car, my phone will connect the call to the car audio and then switch to my AirPods or wired earphones. And after a few minutes, it goes back to the car audio. The switching goes on and on and on and on. It is such a painful customer experience.

I truly feel hopeless that Apple does not have a solution and is not willing to acknowledge the issue.

Thanks for getting back to us, Treadstone05. It's appreciated. We also understand your frustration. However, it can be difficult troubleshooting in this forum. We're happy to continue here, though.

We do have some isolating questions and steps we need to cover:

  1. Which model of iPhone are you using, and which iOS is it currently on (Settings > General > About)?
  2. Which firmware version are your AirPods currently on? Identify your AirPods - Apple Support
  3. Which other applications are you also experiencing this issue with?
  4. Are your AirPods switching to the speakerphone only while connected with your vehicle, or does this happen other times?
  5. Do your AirPods continue to switch after resetting them? Reset your AirPods - Apple Support

Also, if you'd rather work directly with Apple Support, you can reach them here: Get Support

All the best.

Hi Treadstone05,

Sounds like you've done a great job isolating the issue. If your device disconnects from one Bluetooth device, automatically connecting to the next or directly playing from your iPhone looks to be expected behavior.

"The playback destination returns to iPhone if you move the device out of Bluetooth range." You can find this information and other helpful details here: Set up and use Bluetooth accessories on iPhone - Apple Support

There's also helpful information and steps here: If the sound from your wireless headphones cuts out or is distorted

If the issue continues, reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist.
