Airpods automatically connecting

I have airpods first gen (the case is second gen) and every time I connect to a speaker my airpods automatically connect to my phone. It happens constantly and I can’t seem to figure out why. I also have no “choose when to connect” option when I click on more info for my airpods. How do I fix them from automatically connecting to my phone?
