Can I use my 2017, 27-inch iMac running on Mojave as a monitor/external display for my new M1 MacBook Air?

Good evening. I want to know whether my 2017 27-inch iMac running on Mojave can be used as a display for my new M1 MacBook Air that is running on Big Sur?

If I can do it, I will be helpful for me to explore fully the features of Big Sur.

Thanks in advance.

No, Target Display is dead and has been since 2014. Please refer to Target Display Mode (Target Display Mode), specifically:

iMac models introduced in 2011, 2012, 2013, and mid 2014

To use any of these iMac models as an external display:

  • The iMac used as a display must have macOS High Sierra or earlier installed.
  • The other Mac that you're connecting it to must have been introduced in 2019 or earlier and have macOS Catalina or earlier installed.
  • The cable connecting the two Mac computers must be a Thunderbolt  or Thunderbolt 2  cable.

Good evening. This is the reply from Luna Display:

...Thank you for your interest in Luna Display! Luna will allow you to use your 2017 iMac as a secondary display for your M1 MacBook Air. For Mac-to-Mac mode, the primary Mac must be at least a 2011 Mac with macOS 10.11 El Capitan or later, and the secondary Mac must be running macOS 10.11 El Capitan or later.

The Luna unit will need to be plugged directly into the primary Mac, from which programs and windows are projected. For an M1 MacBook Air, you should choose USB-C Luna.'

I don't know whether the above information can be taken at face value. From what others have replied to my question, I understand that target Display Mode is dead for my 2017 iMac.

I wish to receive counsel in this matter as to how to proceed🙏

Good morning. Thanks for your counsel. I too was thinking upon those lines you have suggested: to purchase an external display. I found that 27" or larger displays of LG and Samsung makes had good reviews but would cost me plus/minus 30000 INR. But I refrained from adopting this easy way out because of two reasons: 1] I live in a single bedroom flat and this will not allow me to have a second work desk. In case I provide for an extra working space, other needful furniture setups have to be displaced. Further, such changes will add up to the cost. 2] Even if I were to have this additional set up with a new and large external monitor, I will be having fresh problems: my iMac is my main workstation and I am spending hours at it every day. I badly wanted to use it as a display for my new M1 MacBook and spent about 2-3 days reading various articles and Videos as how I could have my desire met. But all of the my searches were fruitless and with a last glitter of hope I have come to the Apple support company. It was here only that I got a ray of hope: Luna Display. I have been continuing my correspondence with this company Astropod [started by a team of ex-Apple engineers]. I had questioned them specifically how their device would allow me to have my iMac 27" in which Apple has eliminated TDM. I received this link from them to which I followed up my 'study😀' further on another two links as given below:

My impression is that this is a genuine company with impressive support. I am amazed at the lack of advertisement upon this product. My Google search of 3 days did not give me any clue that such a device existed, and rather I realised that numbers of people were in a situation as that of mine who were eagerly hoping that Apple would in their releases offer restoration of TDM.

I understand that the resolution of the display will be non-retina and have read that the company is working to provide support for 4k in future updates.

Thanks for this link. I am exploring this pointer. I have also during my exploration learnt of a cheaper software solution: Duet Display. Apparently the latter's recent updates would enable it to be used between two Macs. I have asked a question to Luna Display whether their device will meet my need. Waiting for their reply.
