Home Screen on ipad

I want to run my handwriting calendar app or really any other app on the home page. Like if I’m looking at my Home Screen and I swipe right it takes me to the widget page of my home screens, what I want is to have my calendar app to be open and run on that full home page. Making it super simple to log or check or change my schedule which does change a lot. Almost like when you give your kid your phone but lock it to one app, but I also need to access my apps at same time. Is this possible? Does anyone understand what I mean? Keep in mind I have tried widgets and get so confused it never works and most of time a widget will just open the app. I want to edit and change it in real time, not just a button to open it.
