New MacBook user and unable to get it to work with multiple monitors

Hi all… I just got a new MacBook Pro and I am supposed to be able to use multiple monitors, but when I try to use the option button to detect the monitors it never appears.

for reference I have a Apple M1 pro, dell monitors connected with display ports and a dell d6000 docking station which looks like it is all compatible … any thoughts ?

The specs for that dock also tout its ability to drive a fake DisplayLink display. That could provide an additional display at far less that Full hardware acceleration, if you had slow-to-change dat like program listings, spreadsheets, or stock quotes. that feature would require you to install the Driver that creates a fake display buffer in RAM.

The Dell dock is perfectly compatible ... with Dell computers.

Macs do not support multiple displays over one cable, unless that cable (and the first device connected) are genuine ThunderBolt devices. The dell 6000 is a USB device. with a Mac, you get at most one display off the dell 6000.

Nothin s=is stopping you from connecting the second display directly, and your Mac will drive it just fine.
