Changing reader default from Acrobat

I'm having a major problem rescuing my files from Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 2022.001.20112. It not only is holding my PDF files hostage, also photo files, text files that when opened with any other file extension reads like gibberish. I've opened info in every app I can think of to access changing the default mode but that option is nowhere to be seen. I've tried right clicking the file, which allows me to open with other applications onetime only. Acrobat does not release its Vulcan death grip on the file. I am ready to pull my hair out! Any help would be greatly appreciated. MacBook Air 13 inch early 2915. Thanks in advance.

Click on the file (select it) press Command I, then look where it says, "Open with." Then select the app that you want to use for opening it, there is the option for it to be for all similar files too.

Personally, I find that Preview works just as well as Acrobat Reader and is dramatically quicker responding.

Use a Windows 11 PC:

I was having this issue, and I opened my files Adobe Acrobat Reader on a Windows 11 PC. It worked just fine. Try the same.
