Software update no longer working?

Why did my system preferences > software update module stop working? around Mar-Apr 2022

Just spins in a never-ending loop without any information or uodate activity? OS 11.6.4 current

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.6

The Apple Software Update Applet, IMHO has been iffy at best.


Using the Terminal Application use the below command


softwareupdate -l


What is listed in the output ?


It should list Big Sur 11.6.5.


If it does list 11.6.5 - good


Again in Terminal the below command


softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 11.6.5


This will download the Full Version of Big Sur 11.6.5 & place a new application in the Applications folder called " Install Big Sur "


Suggest restarting the computer Safe Mode. This will perform a Disk Repair, clear cache files and only load Apple Software, extensions and fonts. The boot up will be slow and can take some time - Normal


Then and only then Launch the Install Big Sur and follow the prompts.
