Pages is not a Word clone and has been around since 2005 without any ability to preface content with line numbers. Surprised that you are surprised about that fact. You can send direct feedback to the product team from the application menu, but if they haven't added this feature since 2005, it may not go anywhere.
Other word processing applications in addition to MS Word offer this feature, namely, LibreOffice Writer or Softmaker's Office 2021 for Mac.

You use MS Word, or another word processing application that supports line numbers. Pages does not.
I am a scientist that writes manuscripts for publication. Most journals want the line numbers so that when reviewers make comments to the authors it is easy to find the issue and solve it. Thus, in fifteen years I am surprised that I am the only one that has brought up this issue. Since I don't know code I don't know if this is an easy fix to Pages, but if it is . . .
This solved my question, however the answer is more than a little surprising.
As a scientist, I am amused that you are not using TeX for full manuscript control… 😎
