What do I need to buy to be able to use devices that use usb? Feels like a typical Apple money grab thing. Oh no doubt it's the newest greatest but seriously -- how much do I have to spend to be able to plug in a usb device--

I assume you are using a newer Mac that only has USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports. You can connect USB-A devices using a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Apple sells them as does Other World Computing. You can use a USB-3 hub with multiple ports to connect multiple devices to one USB-C port on your Mac.

Every MacBook Pro that I know of has usb ports. Maybe you are not recognizing the ports as usb.
You can get adapters to connect one type of usb device to a different usb port.
