Mail is Slow and lagging.

Since last update with MacOS Monterey, when I open Mail, everything is slow. (In the mail app) I get the color circle every 20-40 second. Spend hours with Apple tech. This is happening on my labtop and desktop. I used Google mail and Microsoft Exchange for work email. We have reinstalled the software and did numerous things with apple tech, and still, not fixed. Its only in mail, everything else on both computers are fast and working great. I have removed all my emails and it's still happening. Mail is extremely slow to response. HELP!

iMac Pro, macOS 12.3

Thank you very much Alf! This tip has perfectly solved my annoying slowness problem, especially the reindexing part:

(Excerpt from the cited Macpaw article, please read the full article to give credit).

"Reindex your Apple Mailbox

Rebuilding your Mailboxes is often enough to solve many of the issues an overburdened Mail app may experience. However, if you’re still having problems (such as the app becoming so unresponsive it barely works or fails to launch), you should manually reindex your Mailboxes.

Here’s how to manually reindex your Mailbox:

  1. First, quit Apple Mail if the app is running.
  2. Launch Finder and select Go from the Menu Bar.
  3. Enter ~/Library/Mail/ and press Go.
  4. Choose the V8 folder (depending on your macOS version, it can be named V5, V6, or V7) > MailData. Next, locate and delete all the files that start with Envelope Index, such as “Envelope Index” or “Envelope Index-wal.”
  5. Note: It’s a good idea to copy each file to your desktop before deleting it."

I do have to report that after deleting CleanMyMac, after 1 full day, my mail is faster. It takes 2 seconds to load each inbox etc. It's still not as fast as it was, and I'm not sure it will last, but it seems that deleting this piece of software has somewhat worked for me. It's very possible it's not the cause as others don't have this software installed and it still persists for some after reinstalling the OS.

Apple, please look into this issue it's causing a lot of headache for MANY of your users.

"CleanMyMac is considered by most experienced users in these forums to be akin to malware. "

I think that is unfounded and inaccurate. I doubt that anyone who uses it considers it malware.

I have used MacPaw's CleanMyMac for five years (and their ClearVPN for 2 years) and recommend it.

As to the issue that Mail is having, as other have said, it varies from time to time and machine to machine. This morning, for instance, the messages were all visible immediately.

Concerning the suggestion to delete CMM for the allegation that it is affecting Mail, I have found CMM so useful that I would not like to do without it. "Cleaning" is but the least significant and useful of its many features.

If reported to Apple as a problem with CMM, Apple is likely to say it's a third party issue and not their problem.

It will be quicker and more productive to ask MacPaw to look at it. Those of us who use CMM should use its Support menu to start a ticket (they call it a "request") with MacPaw.

My request will say that some members in Apple Discussions report temporary blank message fields in Mail, some of those members run CMM, and other members who don't use CMM are saying CMM is likely causing the problem.

To add to this response, I want to point out that I now keep my iPhone right by my computer.

When I open Mail on my iMac I watch for minutes while I wait for mail to appear in whole and simultaneously open my iPhone and the mail is instantly there in IOS Mail.

There is no sensible reason for why this is happening, connected to the same network, same mail accounts, it is just ridiculous.

Your post is inaccurate. I run no third party utilities, certainly not CMM.

I have three Macs: Mac mini M1, MacBook Air M1, MacBook Pro M1 Max. All are configured the same.

Only the MacBook Pro M1 Max has this horrible Mail application problem: wait for minutes for mail message lists to appear.

Other two Macs work perfectly and are responsive.

Mail is unusable on the MacBook Pro M1 Max.

That appears to be in response to my post.

It appears to say that my post is inaccurate.

My post says "some members in Apple Discussions report temporary blank message fields in Mail, some of those members run CMM.."

In other words, some people who have the problem are not running CMM.

Like you.

I had the same issue with my MacBook Pro, MacOS Monterey 12.6, Chip Apple M1 Max.

I had installed the GPG / Open PGP suite on my MacBook. When I started Apple Mail, every few times I would get a reminder to subscribe to the GPG Mail Extension. I always declined.

My MacBook Pro continuously got slower on start-up.

I uninstalled the GPG / Open PGP Extension and that fixed it.

Go to: Mail Preferences --> Extensions --> click on the Extension you want to remove and remove it. Close Mail. Reboot the computer.

My Apple Mail now loads normally. This may be affected by any Extension and not limited to just the GPG / Open PGP Extension. You may want to remove all Extensions.

Wait and see if it continues to be a solution.

I looked at my Mail Prefs->Extensions, but saw no extensions at all. Nothing to remove.

I believe you're right about Monterey being the source of the issues. I will tell you why ... yesterday, I installed Ventura 13.0 on my 2017 iMac and presto, email display delays seem to have dropped to 2-3 seconds... problem is I have seen this before so I will hold my final verdict for the next week or so.

I just wish Apple would acknowledge that there is/was a technical problem when they are alerted to it and at least advise people of a 'band-aid' fix and that they know about and are dealing with the problem - not much to ask for and as in my case, it would have saved the contents of an entire email account!

Here's hoping!

Not sure what slow loading means. Does that refer to the launching, or the downloading, or the loading/display after downloading.

Anyway, speed is not the problem and may be unrelated to the problem. The problem is that after loading, all the messages can be seen, but their message fields can be seen for only 10-15 seconds, long enough to speed-read read a couple of short ones, and begin to reply to one. And then all the message fields go empty for a couple of minutes.

And, it happens with old messages stored in folders. While typing this, I opened the folder of my mail-order emails, and all the message fields were blank for 15 seconds. But when I looked at all my other folders, their message fields appeared immediately.

Mail is Slow and lagging.
