Weird behavior with "D" key going dead

I have a really weird thing that I cannot fix.

Sometimes out of the blue my keyboard does not respond to the "D" key anymore, not the built-in keyboard, not the external USB-connected one. So this seems not to be a hardware issue. When this happens I can often "fix" it by quitting the current program, but there seems not to be a particular program I can point to. Sometimes switching between programs gets me the d-key back, sometimes I have to log out and log back in.

It happeneX just now ( X is missing). OpeneX the kbX viewer and type the X-key with the mouse, now the D-key is back functioning (replaced the non functioning D with X in the previous sentence).

That's so weird. Anyone's got an idea what that could be? And how to fix it permanently?

Hi ruggiero,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities! Since this issue you're experiencing with the 'D' key seems to be isolated to a program or the software, try starting up in safe mode to isolate the issue further. Here's how:

  1. "Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
  2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
  3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window."

Find more information about safe mode and what to do next if the behavior continues or doesn't continue here: How to use safe mode on your Mac. If it doesn't occur in safe mode, it could be related to a login item. Here's how to manage them: Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac.

Hope that helps!
