Optimised battery charging for the first time in 6 months - only on USB-C, or due to low cycles number?

I've been using an M1 Max 16" MacBook Pro since the beginning of December 2021. Running Monterey 12.3.

I've always charged it with the included 140W charger + MagSafe 3 cable. According to iStat Menus, it just passed 40 charging cycles (not a lot, I know) and battery health is still at 100%.

Up until today, I have never seen that optimised battery charging has kicked in, even though it has always been enabled under Battery Settings. Today, it just so happened that I tried charging the computer with my wife's 87W charger over USB-C, and now it says it will be fully charged tomorrow morning at 05:00.

So this is the first time in the 6 months I've owned this machine, that it has actually paused at 80%.

Does anybody know if this is because my battery has done so few cycles so far, such that it hasn't "learned my usage pattern" until now?

It would seem strange that this feature would work only when charging through a USB-C port.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

You do not have to micro-manage the battery.

It sounds like BHM is working as expected—About battery health management in Mac notebooks w/ silicon

the rule of thumb — if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portibility then use the battery only.

Thats it.

I would not worry about, I would not second guess it, I would not try a drill down on the BHM software....for some explanation.

It is recommend to use the charger that ships with the Mac—you can read the tech specs, read the foot notes:

MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2021) - Technical Specifications

if you run a diagnostic it will report an error...for ex. so the software is managing and overseeing the battery health for you—
