Why does my macbook air connect to wifi even though its plugged it the lan?. I should not have to turn off wifi for it to pick the fastest connection

In network preferences move the Ethernet connection to the top of the list. WiFi is likely at the top of the list currently. Your computer will try to connect to the topmost network in the list first.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
The menu for reordering the connections is in System Preferences: Network Preferences: (drop down menu at bottom next to + & -) Set service order. Where you can drag to set service order. I'm running the Ethernet through a hub connected to the thunderbolt port. So I'm going to experiment on which one of these goes live when I connect to the hub and set that at the top.
