I was able to sync from my pc itunes playlist to my iphone but unable to sync the same playlists to my ipod

Just to be clear about a specific point in turingtest2's post; each device has its own Sync setup. You have to set Sync options for the iPod, even if you want them to be exactly the same as the iPhone.
