Numbers - cell format and exchange rates

I have not been able to select the currency for New Zealand dollar when formatting the cell and choosing currency format. The currency is not available in the currency drop down list. Can this be made available via some settings ? And the currency exchange rate too ?

Yes, the assumption seems to be that the common abbreviation $ is used for the New Zealand Dollar. If you need to display NZ$ then you can try setting up a Custom Format like this:

Unfortunately on my machine the decimal places do not seem to be displaying properly after Custom Format is applied. Maybe you will have better luck.

The Custom Format (like other Currency formats) controls the display only, not the actual numeric value in the cell.

To get exchange rates you can use the CURRENCY function together with the appropriate symbols, e.g.,

=CURRENCY("NZD","USD")

or,

=CURRENCY("USD","NZD")

depending on whether you want direct or indirect exchange rates.

Note that these quotes are not "real time." They're good for indicative purposes only.

P.S. Another user has pointed out it is easy to get the decimal places to display; make sure Show Trailing Zeros is selected.

Yes thanks for the note. That helps with the display in the cell. But you will not still be able to get a currency conversion value using the currency conversion functions with the input parameter from that cell because inherently it will not know that what you had defined in custom format is actually New Zealand dollar. Ultimately you are unable to get New Zealand cross currency exchange rates.
