Device Security / Hacking

I have both an Apple MacBook Pro and iPad Air but am only using my iPad at the moment…my Mac was out for service for the longest while (delayed & hijacked with COVID as well), and I’ve not recovered all my data nor used it since (for about a year).

The other day I was doing something (always on my iPad) ‘Google’ oriented (can’t remember, but not major), when a day or two later I got a ‘Google’ prompt informing/asking me to confirm a sign-in to a new device that seemed to correlate to the time I was performing that unremembered ‘Google’ activity (I could swear it was NOT a sign-in…but?). This strange notification prompted me to perform a ‘Google’ security checkup, which has now got me very confused and nervous!

When I looked up my attached devices, it showed an iPad but NOT the iPad Air I am (was) using but rather an older iPad I have but don’t use which I’m frankly baffled as to why it should still show as ‘attached’ (meaning logged in?). It also properly showed my Nest Hub and some speakers, BUT then ALSO showed a MAC running SAFARI?…which it showed as the ‘ACTIVE’ device! even though I’m on my iPad Air! So I then changed my previous OK response to the previous ‘Google’ security checkup prompt, and changed my password as recommended. Upon then looking back at my attached devices, expecting to now see just my iPad Air (the actual device being used) and my Nest Hub, I was shocked to AGAIN SEE MY MACBOOK PRO being shown as the ACTIVE DEVICE! with NO iPad being listed at all! It again recommended I change my password which I just did and won’t repeat without a resolution to this problem… AND I AM BOTH STUMPED AND CONCERNED.

Please advise as to what is going on…WHY is my Mac showing as THE active device that is receiving password change requests while my actual iPad Air is not even listed (neither before nor after my just newly changed password)?…and has my security actually somehow been breached? HOW can I both properly secure my devices AND have the ACTUAL devices I have attached properly show?

I’m not the most computer software ‘savvy’ especially when it comes to keeping up with all the many new revision upgrades, but I can usually get around…one other thing that would help me keep things clearer as well would be if I could rename my 2 attached iPads that got somehow automatically named the same…’Marion’s iPad (2)’. Can this be done without me having to delete and re-enter both profiles?

Thank you to anyone willing & able to respond quickly…hopefully with an explanation and solution! I’d be so grateful…Marion

You needn’t panic…

iPadOS Safari can operate in two modes - the default Desktop mode or Mobile. The browser User Agent, as enumerated by the website, determines how the website is rendered in your browser. What you are seeing in your Google security report is how your browser was presenting itself (as a Mac computer) when you were accessing Google.

When iPadOS Safari used in Desktop Website mode, the User Agent declares itself as Safari on macOS (Catalina).

Here is an example:

By contrast, if you switch to Mobile website mode, your User Agent is instead detected as Safari on iOS:

You can switch browser modes using the options menu accessed from the aA icon that you’ll find at the left end of the Safari Address Bar.

I hope this information and explanation is helpful in clarifying the observed behaviour of your iPad.
