Group and Ungroup are greyed out on the dropdown menu. I have selected the items I want to group, and I can group them using the pull down menu, but the keyboard shortcut is unavailable.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you using option command g and option shift command g? Another shortcut is control click which brings up a new dialogue box for grouping and ungrouping.
