Apple Mail won't sign in to Google account

Google just changed their policy for other mail clients to access their Google account. When I attempt to sign in to my Gmail account thru Apple Mail I get the following:

Nothing has changed in my mail settings. I've tried all the standard remedies, re-entering the password, making a new account, etc. Nothing works.

Below is the Google notice announcing the change. I cannot find any direction from Google or from Apple as to what the new sign in policy is. Can anyone please help? Thanks very much.

Found the answer. You have to generate a Google "app password" in your Google account. This replaces the former user name and password sign-in method. First you have to create "2 step authorization" which will then allow the option to generate an "app password".
