How to resolve Slow Email Opening on macOS Monterey 12.4

Seems like ever since my Mac OS Monterey was updated to 12.4, I've had a lot of problems opening my email. I can click on the email envelope to open my email and wait a minute or so for my emails to be downloaded. Then when I click on the email to open, it only opens to show who it's from and the subject, but it may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to fully open the message of the email. Even if it's only 2 or 3 lines. Normally, I could click on the email and it would open completely, whether it was an ad or a letter from someone. Has anyone else had this slow email opening problem?

Here is what worked for me today 6/26/22 (OS Monterey 12.4 on iMac). I went into Mail>Preferences>Privacy and unchecked "Protect Mail Activity." I made sure "Hide IP Address" was checked. Suddenly all my emails will open. It was taking 1-2 minutes or more every day since the last OS update. What a relief. I hope this is useful for you.

On a late '15 iMac so this is my terminal OS (wouldn't have updated except needed to purchase MSOffice). Overall a little slow but everything works except Mail. All of the problems listed here. Tried all of the fixes here through OS reinstall. Clearly something Apple should fix. Anyone got the odds on that?

Unless you're absolutely married to the Office interface you might give these two, free, open-source apps a try": LibreOffice and SoftMaker FreeOffice 2018. Both can open, edit and save Office douments in MS Office formats or their own format. I prefer LibreOffice and have been using it exclusively since upgrading to Catalina and later OSs.

I will try the re-install Montery option.

Note I have an 2017 4K Retina machine. before I had the failure of the Fusion drive; it is still broken and I boot externally.

That already made me rather exasperated.

I was thinking to pass this computer off to my wife, and buy a new high-end iMac for myself (after quite some arguing she agreed).

BUT note (no one is reading this at Apple) that I cannot hand over a computer where the email is slow and unresponsive.

So I think I met my Nemesis at apple here.

I'm stuck.

The only thing I have is the F-Secure browser protection.

But I have this for over 5 years now, and the latest is the Monetery version.

There was a very smooth transfer to Monterey (I skipped Big Sur) there were no 16 bits-hiccups, I had cleaned as much as possible.

The old stuff relates mainly to adobe garbage (like everyone has) and some old printer related stuff.

generally to me it looks healthy (exept that the memory gets a lots of swaps) but performance even with Lightroom is OK.

Thanks OBDave for your reply. This has been going on since they upgraded to macOS Monterey Version 12.4. There have been so many complaints about this, I'm surprised Apple hasn't responded or fixed this problem. It's very frustrating waiting for my email message to open. Seems to me, someone would have a simple solution short of buying a new computer or reverting back to an older version macOS. I can't believe my software is too old (6 years) and is no longer compatible with this latest Version of Monterey. Hopefully there is an answer out there somewhere. Thanks again.

Thanks, but I had it in the shop and they did that. Still very, very slow. It may never open sometimes. Don't know why Apple hasn't at least given us a logical explanation. It would be nice to get the real answer instead of so many guesses. Too many people are having the same problem, so there defiantly is a problem, but what is it?

I'm not installing any non-Apple apps on the computer, just running disc repair, which has done nothing. My past experience with band-aid approaches is not good. Some slowed down the processing speed entirely too much on earlier computers and operating systems. Mail should just work.

I'm a rookie when it comes to computer problems. I did notice though that my RAM was very low. It shows I have 636 MB free. Used 4.28 GB Cached files: 3.10GB. Then it says Available RAM: 3.72 GB. Could that be my problem with my email, not enough RAM to bring it in faster? Why do I only have 636 MB free RAM?

You're the first person I heard say they use Eudora. I thought I was the only one. I use to live in the foothills above Sacramento and got the Internet from a company in Grass Valley, CA. They were the ones that set me up with Eudora. The only problem was, I had to download the program every time I go a new computer and one at a time reinstall my contacts. I got my Mac about 6 years ago and Apple setup my email so I still have my same email address I've had for over 20 years. I also use the program "Magic Mail" that I can use on any computer that connects me to the Grass Valley server so I can get my email that way when my Apple acts up like it is now. You say MacOS Ventura will fix this email problem when it comes out? Is Ventura newer that Monterey? There was a good tip from "Old Toad that I tried. I hope it works. I'll know more next week. I hope this Ventura comes out soon.

@olyman1955: I was a software engineer at Qualcomm from 1995-2005, and Qualcomm was the publisher for Eudora at that time. Still my favorite email program. Apparently when Qualcomm decided to stop supporting it, they released it as an open source project called Penelope, which was to be a plug-in for Mozilla Thunderbird. But as far as I can tell, nobody ever did anything with it.

Mail.app works OK. My biggest gripes are that the search function is terrible, and attachments get scattered into a million different folders. It would be nice if all the attachments went to the same place. I have no idea why Apple does things this way, it's pretty awful from a user standpoint.

I still have Eudora on all my Windows computers. Not sure how Apple set up my Man 6 years ago, but I use the same email address from Grass Valley, CA. I assume you worked for Qualcomm by Sacramento? I worked for Coherent Laser Co. in Auburn, just up the hill from Sac. for 10 years then opened my own Awards business in my shop at home.

Hi Kerk, for me, this has been going on since the 12.4 upgrade. That does work sometimes, by hitting rely, but if there's an attachment, it can't open. This has been going on for months now. I'm surprise Apple hasn't got feed back by now and fixed it.

Hi Old Toad, yes, this has been done. I've had a Tech to my house and took it to an Apple repair shop. No one seems to know what has caused this problem. I still say it's do to Apples 12.4 upgrade to macOS Monterey. Apple should be aware of this problem by now, since there are dozens of others that have the same problem. They need to fix this.
