rp2 quit unexpectedly message keeps popping up

This just started this morning and keeps popping up "rp2 quit unexpectedly". The choices are "OK' or "reopen rp2". No matter which choice I select, the message goes away and then it pops up again a few minutes later.

I'm using an iMac mid-2015 27" Retina 5K which is on BigSur version 11.6.4. The new version of BigSur came out 3 weeks ago, 11.6.6, but I have been unable to upgrade to the new version. memory is 24GB 1600MHz DDR3.

A search of my computer for applications titled rp2 comes up with nothing. A scan by Malware Bytes for viruses comes up with no instances of malware or viruses on the computer

Please restart in Safe Mode, and then attempt to update the computer. If you cannot get it to restart in Safe Mode with the keyboard you normally use, please use any wired USB keyboard. Once in Safe Mode then execute your update.


If you still cannot update, then please do the following:


It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.


When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

Please restart the computer in Safe Mode per the directions in the  How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support link. 


Note: If you are using a wireless keyboard please either plug it in using the supplied Lightning cable that shipped with it. If you are using a legacy keyboard or a third-party keyboard that does not have re-charging abilities, please use any USB keyboard. Also note that a Safe Mode restart may require you to hold down the shift key for up to 5 minutes before the computer starts in Safe Mode. You will know it is in Safe Mode when you see “Safe Mode” in the upper right of the display.


After restarting in Safe Mode, then restart normally and test.

I do not have a fire cable for my wireless keyboard, but simply restarting the computer seems to have solved the problem of the rp2 quit unexpectedly pop ups. I still am unable to update to the latest version of mac os though. My gear icon shows there is an update, but when I attempt to do the update, it shows "Searching for update" but it searches forever and can't find it. Apple sent me a link to the specific OS to upgrade, but even when I click that, it still says "Searching for upgrade" but does not find it at all. Apple told me that it may not be able to be upgraded because they consider it a "vintage" product from 2015 and that I would need to take it to an Apple authorized repair center. The computer is now working just fine, I just can't do the latest update for some reason
