Messages documents and data

New 13 pro here and while this seems to be minor, there is no explanation or fix that I have found yet. Under the messages app when it comes to documents I have phantom GIF and Other using space. I did not transfer data over from the old iPhone. Only things I synced from the cloud were contacts, calendar and notes. No messages. I started fresh on everything.

I have attempted to toggle the messages on cloud off and back on, letting it sync. This process was done a handful of times with no change. I have logged out of iCloud and back in. No change. If I toggle messages off for iCloud the phantom data goes away. It’s only when the option is toggled on.

the 4 text threads I have do not have any attachments. There are no files, GIFS or images. I click on these both to delete what is in there and it’s a blank black page.

Any insight?

Hi Charlilynn3,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple support Communities. We see that space is being used for certain categories under the Message section of your iPhone storage.

By chance, did you restart your device to see if the storage amount updates? If not, lets give that a try:

1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
The volume button is located on the left side of the device, and the side button is located on the right

2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or
unresponsive, force restart your device.

3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo.

More details here: Restart your iPhone

You mentioned that when you enable Messages in iCloud, the data goes away. To clarify, is this feature enabled on your previous phone as well?

If so, and there's data in Messages on that device, that could be where it's coming from.

If that's not the case, we suggest connecting your device to a computer and verifying the storage using the steps in the section,

"Use the Finder or iTunes to check the storage on your iOS device," as shown here: How to check the storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Let us know if this helps.

Best wishes!
