Silence Unknown Callers

iPhone XR, iOS 15.5

Have SILENCE UNKNOWN CALLERS turned on.

When numbers listed with CONTACTS are marked as FAVOURITE, family etc., call my phone always RINGS.

Numbers NOT LISTED with CONTACTS show and can leave messages but there’s NO RING, the way I intend it to be.

However, when I receive calls from numbers which ARE LISTED with CONTACTS but NOT as FAVOURITES those calls are treated the same as numbers which are NOT on my CONTACTS list, NO RING, which is not what I want. I want to HEAR those calls!

I have always thought UNKNOWN CALLERS ONLY applies to numbers I have NOT listed with CONTACTS, i.e., numbers I do not know, or do not want to know, and therefore have not listed. Am I wrong?

You are right on. When you have Silence Unknown Callers set to ON then only callers that are not on in contact list are sent directly to voicemail. This feature has no relation to contacts listed in the favorites list.

What happens when you turn Silence Unknown Callers to OFF? Do the calls from anyone that is not in your favorites list still go directly to voicemail? If YES then you probably have once of the Do Not Disturb focus modes set to ON which allows calls only from callers listed in Favorites.
