Documents taking up a lot of space

When I go to About This Mac > Storage, Documents is taking up nearly 40 gig of space. When I drill down for more information under Manage, there's nothing to report under any of the tabs. Large Files, Downloads, Unsupported Apps, Containers or File Browser. Any ideas as to what is consuming so much space? Apps like Clean My Mac do not report anything, either.

The final word from Apple on Managing the " Other/ System Data “ Category

Other / System Data: Contains files that don’t fall into the categories listed here. This category primarily includes files and data used by the system, such as log files, caches, VM files, and other runtime system resources. Also included are temporary files, fonts, app support files, and plug-ins. You can't manage the contents of this category. The contents are managed by macOS, and the category varies in size depending on the current state of your Mac.

Never use such **** as cleanmymac... it's cancer.

If you want to have a better picture of what is using space on your drives, try Daisy Disk.

Never use any program that claims to "clean", "optimize" or "speed up" your mac. They're scams, and cleanmymac is one of the worst, known to delete stuff that is needed, and causing all sorts of trouble. Most macs tainted by it end up requiring a clean install.
