Why does my $7k M1 Max MBP run worse than my 2013 Trash Can MacPro?

After a 6 month delay my new laptop is here. I saved up and maxed out everything on it - 64GB RAM, M1 Max chip and 8TB drive. Not only am I dealing with FreeSync issues and my external displays always defaulting to variable refresh rates every time I log in, my nice Benq monitors flicker and swap which is the primary. Even worse, Illustrator runs like an old tired dog on files that aren’t under 300mb. I have optimized hardware, I’m not running other programs and everything is up to

date. My old MacPro handled things about the same if not better than this new machine.

Anyone have any insight or tips for making Illustrator run more efficiently/faster? This was literally the entire point of my upgrade…

also I have combed through the annals of the intertoobs about this external display issue and tried about 12 hacks to work around it and to no avail….still waiting for CalDigit TS4 dock to come back in stock in hope that might help…

M1 Max Silicon ARM machines are a completely different architecture than your Intel-based previous machine. You need to make sure the apps you are using and the monitor are actually optimized for Silicon ARM-based technology. What you're describing leads me to suspect not optimized for ARM.

For your monitors are you using the right type of USB C cables? Is the Illustrator app you're using M1 Ready? Contact the monitor manufacturers and find out if their monitors are optimized for your MBP and if so, what exact cables/configurations you need to run them properly. Contact the app developer for the Illustrator software to ensure their software is optimized for ARM-based machines.

RE: adobe Illustrator

Illustrator now runs natively on Apple computers with the Apple silicon M1 chip that performs faster than the similarly configured previous generation systems.

¿do you have the correct version of illustrator installed for your M1 processors?
