Menu bar icons behind notch, Monterey 12.4

Why are icons still hiding behind the notch? The gif attached shows the only way I can see all icons, there are usually two or three "behind" the notch. They don't exist in the screen recording, but dragging the visible one into the notch area rearranges them so that another becomes visible.

Is there some setting or app that makes the under-notch area "no go" for icons so they appear on the other side?

Yes on Macs *without* a notch menubar icons can extend all the way to meet the menu's. So that is the expected behaviour on a mac with a Notch.

Expected (optimal): menubar icons skips the Notch, i.e. immediately appear to the left

Expected (suboptimal): menubar icons continue under the notch (invisible) and subsequent ones appear on the left (this could indeed be 'patched' by using empty menubar icons, e.g. using bartender)

Observed: the menubar space is restricted to the area on the right side of the Notch. ALL other menubar icons are simply hidden. Nothing goes under the notch and nothing comes out on the left.

It is really all rather disappointing. And suprising indeed, because in most other instances the notch is just not there (e.g. mouse movement, screenshots etc)

The allocated menubar space is limited.

Try removing some of your not as important menu bar items if you want them all to show.

Use the Command key to drag them off.

The space is limited, but it's not all used either.

I'm looking for a way to mark the "under notch" space as a no-go zone. I've tried spacers from iStat Menus, and "Menu Bar Splitter", but neither can put a "spacer" under the notch so that icons overflow to the other side.

Hopefully the next OS brings both a fix for icons under the notch - regardless of your opinion on my excessive number of icons and meters, that's just bad QA. Put them in an overflow area and give me an icon to click to see them, like Windows' handling of notification area icons.

It looks like the Bartender app will help by letting me put that grab-bag of seldom-clicked but necessary icons in a dropdown menu.

Sorry, that comes across as more judgemental than helpful. I'm sure it was not meant that way, but the problem is real. OP - and many others - for whatever personal reason simply need a "large" number of menu bar items. Why would Monterey not just show them on the left side of the dock?

Even if a user has so many items that they would extend below *and* all the way across to the left, the ones that would not be under the notch are still hidden. The notch effectively reduces the available menubar space to ~45% and hides any items extending beyond that.

I was going to suggest Bartender, as well. I think it may help.

I don't have a Mac with the notch, so I cannot test this on one, but in my 2019 MBP the icons can extend all the way to meet the menus on the left, so well past where the notch would be. I am surprised by your experience, since I was expecting the notch to be basically "not there" as far the software is concerned. The cursor can move "under it" from left to right and back, can't it?
