My MacBook 2020 with macOS Monterey will not automatically go to ASUS MX279 monitor. I have to pull pages over.
What adaptor do I need so I don't have to keep the MacBook open to go from app to app?

Its not a question about the adapter you are using, it sounds more like you have it set to extend your desktop rather than mirror it.
Go to System Preferences->Displays->Display Settings->Your Asus display->Use Display as, and select Mirror for Built-in Display.
