USB C ports only work for power

The charging cable is just that a charging cable...only it will do low level data-transfer speed limited to 480Mbps (USB 2.0) and it doesn't support video.

If the charger works, but data devices do not work, then there is a hardware issue with the laptop....most likely the Logic Board will need replaced. Power & data are two separate things on these USB-C Macs. One may work while the other won't work. Make sure to try connecting the devices directly to the Mac since some adapters, docks, & hubs may have compatibility issues with some devices.

macOS already has great built-in security, but you must also do your part to keep your Mac clean & safe. Those anti-virus apps, cleaning apps, and third party security software do nothing more than interfere with the normal operation of macOS which can cause all sorts of issues. My 2017 MacBook Pro 15" also just started this behavior. I can charge my Mac with the power adapter in my USB-C ports, but my mouse and keyboard no longer work in any of the 4 ports. I am currently running an AVG deep scan to see if there are any viruses that might be affecting my Mac.

Uninstall AVG and any other third party app that claims to clean, protect, manage, boost performance, etc. These apps use system resources while providing no benefit. They interfere with the operating systems built in systems and they may cause problems.

Thanks BobTheFisherman and HWTech. Even though I have an Intel Mac (not as much protection as Apple M1 chip), I think I will uninstall AVG. We'll see if that fixes my USB-C port problem. If not, a couple other sources suggest resetting NVRAM and SMC, so I'll try that after the workday.

Thanks again, guys. I uninstalled AVG and did an SMC reset. My USB mouse is working again!
