Why does Apple News occasionally “hide” that a story is only available in News Plus? When I see a story that has a +, I know it requires a subscription. Often, Apple News does NOT show the “+” until an unsuspecting reader clicks.

If you are referring to the New York Times or some other publications it is not telling you that you need an Apple News + subscription it is saying you need a subscription to the periodical in question, such as the New York Times.
Deggie, I was referring to the Apple News app on my iPhone...scrolling through stories, and some show that you need a subscription by the "+" next to them. Others do NOT show the plus sign, until you click on the headline. I "fixed" it by deleting the Apple News app from my phone. Not worth the clickbait any longer.
