I have an iPad Mini 6 running the latest OS and it’s showing that Photos is using almost 9 GB of storage. I had maybe 50 photos on there, no videos, no shared libraries, etc. I searched and tried the backup/restore method and deleted the few photos that were on the device. But it’s still showing 9 GB of storage being used by Photos. I’d rather not have to start from scratch on the device…any other suggestions?

Photos/images and videos found in the Messages app are all separate items ( copies ) separate from images and videos found in the Photos app.
So, you would need to clear out all the message threads that have images and videos included in those.
Have you checked the Recently Deleted folder/album, in the Photos app, for any photos/images that you may have deleted over time?
Recently Deleted is empty. I have a lot of photos/videos in Messages - is it somehow double counting?
If they are separate then they shouldn't be counted in the Photos storage, correct?
I'll delete some threads from Messages and see if it has any impact.
Photos are photos.
I do not think it matters where on the device they reside.
