How do I stop e-mail synchronizing 18 months worth of mails?

Apple support helped me delete malfunctioning email on laptop. Then we set email up again. Now, I was able to send an email again (YEAH!), BUT I am in the midst of downloading over 1,000,000 emails....meaning, it could be days before I get through the 18 months of old emails that are slowly downloading. I have to keep "waking it up" so it keeps downloading, but I am still o0nly 1 month into the process after 19 hours...HELP!!!

Then perhaps the User ( you ) need to Log Into the Web Interface of the Mail Server and remove the 1 Million e-mail.

The Apple Mail Client is only doing what the User ( you ) has iInstructed it to do.
