I want to update my laptop but can't because i cant sign into my old apple ID. The email that was used a long time ago no longer exists because it was a school i no longer go to. What can i do to switch my old apple id out with my new one so i can update it?

You will need to sign out of the old ID so you can sign in with the new ID. See the 2nd link for a guide of where to sign out/in.
Do you want to change your Apple ID email address on your current Apple ID so you retain access to your data and prior purchases? Note the restrictions in the article.
Make sure you turn off Find My Phone before signing out of the old ID. Once signed out and Find My Phone is off, then sign in with the new ID, then turn Find My Phone back on.

Thanks for sharing! Do you know what happens if one still remains with the same Apple ID "name" which is an email that doesnt longer exist? I have done so for some time, believe more than a year, and it worked out... as anyway I change the notification email, and it has worked...
