Kindle app keeps crashing on my iPad
Update 6.61 seems to have made the app unstable.
The page loads then crashes.
Again and again.
Which is quite irritating

I am using iOs15.5 on my iPad. I updated the kindle app on both my iPhone and on the iPad on the same day. Subsequently, the Kindle app then started crashing on both my iPhone and my iPad upon every attempt to open it. It’s not a problem with the devices, it’s a problem with the Kindle app. I have a rather large Kindle library and it is very highly annoying, because it is taking a very long time for Amazon to rectify this problem. Why not just role the app back back to the previous version? Is that possible? Over the years, I have seen updates on computers and software create all sorts of problems. This is among the most annoying. As it is said, If it’s not broken, then why fix it? I am referring to the update, with that idiom. However, in this case, why are they incapable of fixing it in reasonable time? Amazon has deep pockets; it is a very big corporation, surely they are capable of prioritizing this problem or hiring some help. It’s getting to be several weeks now; in that span they have issued only one Kindle update and it didn’t fix the problem. Normally, they are updating the app more frequently than that.
Status update on my iPad Kindle app: Since I downloaded the new version on my iPhone and it was okay after it finally synched, I decided to risk the new version on my iPad. I did, and apparently since it was synced before, it did not need to again and freeze with the new version. Yay. I don’t have many books from my Library on it yet because of this ongoing issue, but I may download some more. It would sure be a huge help if Amazon's developers would recognize this issue and have a popup notification that says so to the effect of "Please wait while syncing" instead of allowing it to freeze up!
I have the Kindle app on my iPad and still have 200 Gb memory. I actually bought a new iPad so that I can store more books. I already tried switching off the iPad, turning on airplane mode and both doesn’t work. I haven’t tried deleting the app as I have other books that didn’t come from Amazon. I will have to backup all of them or lose them. It’s just so sad
Thanks so much for your kind thoughts and words. And yes, I have no choice but to back up and try deleting the app. Maybe and hopefully that will help.
best regards and thanks again
will let you know if that will work. Hope to do it sooner than later
Check at the Amazon site, under Your Account: Content & Devices, View: All Content and see if your other books and documents aren’t there. If they are, then you can download them later, no backup required! I have several PDFs that I have emailed to my Kindle app that are there on my account.
Sorry, that doesn’t fix the freezing problem that I’m experiencing. This is what I’ve posted at Amazon:
It freezes when it is trying to sync to the cloud. If what you want to read is already onboard your device, quit the app (using the App Switcher) and turn on Airplane Mode before relaunching the app. The inelegant solution (but the only real one until the Kindle developers get in gear) is to leave Airplane Mode off, launch the app and leave it in the Kindle HOME screen while it syncs. It could be quite a while depending on a number of factors including your internet speed, your library, number of user highlights and notes, etc. Watch the spinning daisy/pinwheel network activity indicator – it's on the upper left on an iPhone and on the upper right on an iPad. When it disappears, you're good to go.
The developers need to add a notification or dialog box that warns the user what the delay is about or an option to not sync.
Running iOS vsn 15.6.1 and kindle app for ipad vsn 6.64. Since the end of June, and throughout every iOS and kindle app for ipad update since ens June, kindle crashes every time I try to load the app.
i don’t even get to the kindle app home page, just boom, and back to my ipad home screen. I am so fed up with this, paying Amazon for a kindle subscription that does not work is not great. Yes, I can go online and open my books via the internet, but O cannot download them onto anything that I can read them on. I live in an area with intermittent wifi (at best) so the ability ot download books and read them offline was what attracted me to kindle - that and the much larger selection of free books (on subscription) than that on apple books, and the number of books available (paid and free) in my preferred genre.
Is it nor possible for iOS to put out a patch to iOS then helps nudge kindle in the right direction? Amazon don’t seem to be rectifying it - at least from what I read across multiple forums.
I was able to solve my crashing by deleting the app. Luckily I was able to backup the books not sourced from Amazon in my hard disk when it bought a new IPad. The books from Amazon are still there when you reload the app. But it sucks as reloading took a while.
the app so far hasn’t crashed anymore when before deleting, like you, I couldn’t even open it as it just goes back to home screen
Same thing's been happening to me - but I'm not on iOS 15.5. I'm running the latest Kindle app (6.64 as of today), and iOS 14.8.1 (on both my ipad and iphone).
It was happening on both my iphone and ipad, so I deleted the app and reinstalled it, and now it's working again on both devices.
I also deleted the app finally… in desperation.
Reloaded it and some of the books that I had loaded, via email, were there.
All the books loaded through iTunes had disappeared.
Like FroggedyAnn, above, I had the books backed up so emailed 30 or 40 to myself and reloaded them into the kindle app.
So far it hasn’t crashed.
BUT I haven’t tried updating to 6.64.
AND the app tells you that emailing them to yourself and reloading them will be disabled later this year.
So my advice would be to try the above and, if the app works, don’t update the thing again... or not until the reviews and sites like this say it’s OK.
I suspect it never will though.
I had the same problem: immediate crash after loading the app.
After showing the “tree” image only the library could be seen with my downloads for a sec.
Updated to iOS15.7 and Kindle 6.65.0.100
Tried reinstalling, flight mode, etc. to no avail.
PROBLEM DISAPPEARED AFTER I MANAGED TO SWITCH OFF/CLOSE THE BAR (X) BELOW THE ALL/DOWNLOADED SECTION. IT TOOK ME SEVERAL TRIES.
I have no idea why it worked, but ever since the app is starting w/o any problem. I hope this helps you all.
It seems to be a known issue since 2021 but the solution isn't mentioned clearly anywhere.
I had the same issue on my iPad and with different application version and I solved it by offloading the application.
Go to storage (on iPad that would be Settings > General > iPad Storage > Kindle and click "Offload App") This should delete the application's cache and uninstall it but won't remove it from device. Now go to the home again & click the Kindle app icon to reinstall it. It should work normally & it won't need to download books again.
I hope this would help someone.
Had this issue for six months as well. Finally called customer service (on the phone for 20 min, went through all the standard troubleshooting and ended up filing a trouble ticket). I sense this is an issue of Amazon needing to debug the app according to iOS updates. And I too have invested a lot over the years and assumed I’d be able to access all these books I’ve purchased without issues.
I suggest anyone else who has this issue call Amazon customer service as well until the problem becomes painful enough that they fix it. They certainly have the resources to do so quickly once it’s a priority.

Kindle app is awful. Daily deleting & not able to access many books I have purchased. Whether an Amazon or Apple responsibility they should join forces & correct. Both will be losers. I am getting sick of it & unless corrected will make changes.
Check the Kindle App Forum on Amazon for possible help.
I am having exactly the same problem. I have restarted my iPad, but the problem continues. My iPad is running iOS 15.5. Do we have to wait for Amazon.com to release version 6.62?
