My migration was going to take 116 hours. Is there another way to migrate?

My migration was going to take 116 hours (likely due to my slow rural internet connection). Is there another way to migrate? Or would you recommend finding a location with a faster internet connection to assist with a slightly quicker migration?

you may need an adapter: USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple

Most times one of your external Backup drives, like Time Machine will have a port that makes this cable connection possible.

Well - I'm not sure what works best if it's an older Mac with a separate SATA drive. The last time I used Setup Assistant was with an ethernet cable. For my mid-2012 Unibody, Target Disk Mode only works for FireWire and Thunderbolt. Possibly a better option would be to take out the drive and put it into a USB enclosure. Newer Macs with USB-C/Thunderbolt can be supposedly placed in USB Target Disk Mode, although that gets tricky because of USB-C cable speeds, where many cheaper cables (including Apple OEM) only support USB 2.0 speeds.

Apple is promoting the use of Time Machine backups for Setup Assistant use. Not sure if it can be done wirelessly on the same network like it can for Migration Assistant. They're not that specific here about all the options other than "from an existing computer".

But if the OP could describe the particular Macs by model, that would be helpful.

I used the Setup Assistant with USB TimeMachine backup as the vector moving from a mid- 2012 to a 16" MBP without issue.

If that does not work for some unexplained reason, then use the Migration Assistant.

Moving large amount of data over wifi not only being slow, it is also prone to errors.

NOT due to your internet connection. Internet connection is not used in this process, and none is required.

As others have suggested, the issue is moving that much data over Wi-Fi.

If you can move your devices closer to your Router and connect BOTH with Ethernet, it will be faster. (One will not suffice, it must be both.)

If you can use ANY direct disk-based scheme, it will be faster still.

A cable connection is always preferred compared to WiFI....

The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot of a brand new machine— you have one shot here. Set up your MacBook Pro - Apple Support

The second best way is use the Migration Assistant.

Or erase such that it's back in factory conditions and try Setup Assistant again. Of course there are a bunch of ways to use Setup Assistant. Not sure what the source and target are though, as Apple has gone through so many different connection types over the past decade. Sometimes that's not easy if two Macs don't have any shared wired capability that can be used for a transfer.

Setting up from iCloud through a slow internet connection doesn't sound fun.
