Notify When Left Behind turns back on after being turned off

I want to disable Notify When Left Behind for my iPad (which I normally don't carry with me) and some of my AirTags (which are not currently in use). However, it doesn't seem possible to do this and have it "stick".

When I move one of the tracked devices to a new location, Notify When Left Behind re-enables itself. When I look at the setting for the device in the Find My app, I see that NWLB is turned on again, and there is a new entry in the list of "Notify me, except at:" locations. That location is where I was when I disabled NWLB.

It appears that disabling NWLB doesn't really disable it--it only adds an exception to the notification list. When the device is moved to a different location, NWLB turns back on.

(Why is this an issue? Because I live in an RV and travel full-time. So each time we park at a new place, NWLB turns back on for all my devices and I get a barrage of notifications on my Apple Watch and iPhone the first time I drive away from the RV.)

I'm not sure if this is a bug or a feature. If it's a feature, is there really no way to totally disable NWLB for a given device, short of removing the item from Find My completely (and thereby losing the other Find My functions)?

Hi DSGoldstein1,

Does the issue still occur after restarting your iPad using the steps here: Restart your iPad before turning the feature off again?

Also, let's make sure there are no available software updates for the iPad in Settings > General > Software Update. If does list an update, then we'd recommend completing the steps listed here: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Cheers!

That solution did not work. Once I changed locations (with the AirTags and iPad), Notify When Left Behind turned back on for those devices, with a new exception in the list for the location where I last disabled NWLB, and I began receiving "left behind" notifications again.

This sure seems like a bug. If NWLB is turned off, it should remain off even if the tracked device is moved.
