Keyboard language switching

I have two iMacs, one running OS X 10.13.6 and an older one running OS X 10.11.6.

In the newer system I can switch quickly between keyboard language input sources (English & Devanagari) using the keyboard shortcut: Command + Space bar, which is much faster while typing than using the mouse to change keyboard input from the menubar.

In OS X 10.11.6 this shortcut brings up Spotlight instead.

Is there an alternative shortcut available for the older system or does anyone know if a keyboard switching shortcut can be created?

Try Control Space instead. You may also be able to use Caps Lock if you check a preferences box. In any case you can change the shortcuts in system preferences > keyboard > shortcuts
