Connecting Brother HL-5370DW to Monterey OS

I had my Brother HL-5370DW working with Monterey on an M1 Mac Mini.

Then , inexplicably, it stopped working!

I deleted the driver and now can not re-add it.

Suggestions?

Or do I need a new printer?

Thank you.

Hi,

The latest printer driver from Brother appears to be for macOS 10.15 Catalina.

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hl5370dw_us&os=10060

macOS Catalina drivers have been known to work with some Brother printers even under a later operating system version, so you could perhaps carry out a test. As always, make sure that you have backup copies of all important files (documents, photos, etc) before doing anything,

If necessary, reset the printing system between tests.

Did you also try to reset the printing system as described in Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem – Apple Support (UK)?

>Wireless function went down some years ago. Not tried USB yet.

So, Ethernet has been the only interface used? Directly, or via one of the LAN ports of a Wi-Fi router? It may be worth testing USB as well after resetting the printing system (and with a fresh download of the macOS 10.15 Catalina printer driver 1.5.0 from Brother).

However, if nothing else works, I agree with John Galt, it is time for a new printer. Unfortunately, AirPrint print servers are rather expensive, but you may be able to find a second-hand device via an online auction site. Despite being for AirPrint, it may not be a bad idea to double-check whether such a print server has any extra requirements or compatibility limitations.

...maybe.

Recent macOS versions incorporate native support only for AirPrint-enabled devices: About AirPrint - Apple Support, and the Brother HL-5370DW is not among them.

You might be able to use an AirPrint-enabled print server. A list of them appear near the end of that Apple Support document.

Definitely try installing the most recent driver Jan Hedlund suggested first. You have nothing to lose.

Apple made it loud and clear AirPrint was the way to go over a decade ago. Brother got on board faster than most, but I believe that particular model predated AirPrint by at least a couple years.

Sometimes AirPrint could be implemented in older devices with a firmware update, but I can find no indication Brother did that.

I agree it's unfortunate to relegate perfectly good devices to a landfill, but there is no incentive for Brother or anyone else to invest in something for which they are certain to get zero return.

>Printing with El Capitan on my laptop still works fine!

You may actually have the foundation for a print server with capabilities similar to AirPrint.

A Mac application such as Printopia (https://www.decisivetactics.com/products/printopia/) needs a Mac OS X 10.7 Lion or later Mac (with working printer drivers). The idea is to connect a non-AirPrint printer (locally) to this Mac. The application would allow iPhones and iPads connected to a network to print. I wonder what would happen if another Mac (running macOS 12 Monterey) made an attempt to connect to this print server...

As I have written above "I have already re-installed the driver multiple times. It will no longer recognize that driver. Restarting does not help."

Airprint did not exist when this model was released.

It WAS working, then the interface said a part was missing. Odd error.

Since then no dice.

Wireless function went down some years ago. Not tried USB yet. But I doubt, w/o recognizing the (most current but obsolete) driver that anything will work.

Although, mysteriously, it was working....

Thank you.
