Mouse Lag in Mac OS Monterey

Hundreds of Mac OS users in forums are complaining about the mouse lag that first appeared with an upgrade to Monterey. There is no mention of this being addressed with the latest update to 12.5. None of the solutions offered by forum members seem to help. I am going to go forward with the update to 12.5 and hope that it is resolved — but until Apple directly addresses the issue, there is no reason to believe it has been resolved.

@JMcGee2018, doesn't that keyboard come with a USB unifying receiver, so you don't necessarily have to use Bluetooth? My current work around for this issue is using an Apple wireless keyboard, which I run wired 95% of the time, which is obviously not an ergonomic keyboard ... when running in Bluetooth it has occasional hiccups and even as a developer, for me, it's easier to overlook that it'll fine, fine, fine ... entire word delayed, etc... The mouse side of things is totally unacceptable for me. So, on that front, I use a Logitech M720 triathlon mouse. In Bluetooth mode it's fairly useless. But using the unifying receiver it's really very good EXCEPT, my computer is remote from the mouse with an external monitor, so I have a usb extension to bring the receiver closer to the mouse and it works very well.

The receiver is on a usb extension to a hub and really has no issues.

Side note: reasonable to point out that if the ~2.4ghz receiver needs and extension wouldn't the Bluetooth (also ~2.4ghz) need an extension to work well? Maybe, but that's a separate issue as even if my mouse is any range from the computer it's still effectively useless due to these intermittent lag issues. I have tested that with this specific mouse and others when I'm on the go.

FWIW, in a very quick look I don't have an apple.com.bluetooth.plist as you mentioned but I do have:

  • com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.mouse.plist
  • com.apple.driver.AppleBluetoothMultitouch.trackpad.plist

From when I was testing those.

I just did another update and was shocked at how my system now runs like garbage. The mouse lagging at random times every few seconds is maddening. I am a graphic designer and build my own website for both my businesses- my team meeting this morning was a disaster as my system kept lagging, locking up, having Wi-Fi issues and of course, the mouse. I won’t be upgrading my other systems.. three mouse units (two magic and one USB) and it’s all garbage. I did a hard reset, reinstalled Monterey and ran Cleanmymac numerous times. I have taken my system to the bare minimum, disconnected all devices, Bluetooth and externals. Im going insane.

In my 33 year career, never would I have imagined that "gotta click 2 or three times to get the mouse to register" would be the prominent challenge in my day-to-day work. I've been using Macs since 1989. Monterey is by far the worst Mac OS in memory. This newly-introduced nonsense with using a mouse has become so bad, that I am developing symptoms which resemble carpal tunnel syndrome or arthritis.

Apple has become the new Microsoft — asleep at the wheel and assuming everyone will keep going to them because they always have. I am tired of all these new features added that I never asked for, while the most rudimentary necessities of the operating system are being neglected by Apple.

Just wanted to add to the thread because it's important to find others with the same issue (least of all one not being addressed). I thought I was going a little mad, I even bought a new mouse convinced the problem was on my end. After much unsuccessful troubleshooting I began to read forums with tons of people having the same, basic issue. For me this is something that definitely started with Monterey, I can pinpoint it now almost exactly in hindsight as I was a late upgrader/adopter of 12.x.

Answers below are depressing, but helpful. Thanks for taking the time. I'm Hhaving the same issues with brand new $3,000 Macbook Pro M1 with Monterey 12.6.1 and a new wireless Logitech eregonomic keyboard and mouse. Have tried all the recommended fixes, which work for a period. Then issues return with long delay in each key stroke, very slow cursor, mouse cutting in an out.

Incredibly frustrating and hurting my work as well.

Is there any reason to believe that purchase of a keyboard with an USB cord would be an effective work-around to whatever distortion there is in bluetooth? Is there a wireless keyboard optimized for Monterey? If so, kindly recommend options.

And, just FYI, is it odd to you more experienced users that Library/Preference does not show an apple.com.bluetooth.plist?

Thanks for any advice.
