iPad Does Not Charge Correctly

Some time ago, I laid my iPad Pro down on the ground, standing on its top end and leaning against an end table, with the power cord plugged in. This means the iPad was sitting in such a way that the charging port and cable are straight up in the air. At some point my cat knocked over a soda in a cup with a lid and straw that was sitting on that table and I don't know when she did it or how long the iPad sat there with Mello Yello Zero dripping down onto it, but it dripped right on the charging port and cable. It didn't get a lot of liquid on it but it seemed to be enough to do some damage.

When I saw it I immediately turned the device off, unplugged it, and dried it all as best I could. After several hours I turned it back on and everything worked great except that it doesn't charge correctly, now.

Regardless of what cable I use the iPad will usually detect the cable and try to start charging and then go back to a discharging state almost immediately, as if it's not plugged in at all. Sometimes it flickers between charging/discharging like it has a bad connection. Once in every 50, maybe even 100 times that I plug it in it will finally begin charging and stay that way until it is unplugged again, at which point I have to start the cord-dance again.

I'm assuming liquid damage here, but what specifically could be the issue and is it something that may get better over time, or will it likely get worse? Is there anything I can do to fix it?
